At WIINS Hospitals, our commitment to the health of communities goes beyond providing healthcare services. We recognise the impact of health systems on the environment, which globally contribute almost 5% of greenhouse gas emissions. This has put sustainability at the centre of our efforts to protect our patients’ health and build a healthier future.
"First, do no harm" is a principle that guides us in every aspect of our healthcare mission. To us, it means providing the best possible care while embracing sustainability so that we also protect the environment in which our patients and communities live. To achieve this, we employ a range of green technologies that do not have adverse effects on the environment while also allowing us to provide world-class care to patients.
We use renewable energy from rooftop solar panels, windmills, and geothermal air conditioning to reduce our carbon footprint. We make the most of natural resources by harvesting rainwater and recycling greywater for our gardens and flushing. We also compost wet garbage, use 100% LED lights, and have sensor-controlled dual-flush toilets. With biogas-powered kitchens and energy-efficient appliances, every part of our hospital is designed to save energy and reduce waste. Native landscaping and rain gardens further help reduce stormwater runoff, ensuring a healing space that nurtures both our patients and the environment.
To further our environmental goals, we have implemented targeted initiatives across the hospital. In our operating theatres, we have reduced reliance on potent anesthetic greenhouse gases like Desflurane and Nitrous oxide, opting for safer, eco-friendly alternatives. We have also established robust recycling protocols, increasing recyclable hospital waste from minimal levels to 35%, including the use of paper bags and specialised plastics for ETO sterilisation.
We have appointed a dedicated sustainability officer to spearhead our green initiatives and actively involve staff in environmental projects. From reusing surgical equipment where feasible to promoting energy conservation, every team member plays a role in our journey toward a low-carbon, low-waste system.
Our green initiatives have not gone unnoticed. WIINS Hospitals has been honoured with prestigious awards such as the Gardens Club of India’s 1st Prize for Best Large Garden (2016) and the MEDA 1st Prize for Energy Conservation (2018). Our commitment to innovative, sustainable design has also been featured in “Architecture & Design” magazine, placing us among the world’s best-designed medical institutes.
At WIINS Hospitals, we believe that sustainability is essential to good health. Our green-rated infrastructure not only minimises our environmental footprint but also creates a healing environment where patients can recover naturally. We remain dedicated to advancing eco-friendly practices, ensuring that our commitment to sustainability continues to benefit our community and the planet for years to come.
